Where to stay in Montmartre
Montmartre is a hill, and where you sleep on it decides how many steps stand between your bed and the metro. This guide sorts the area into three bases. It names no hotels and gives no room prices, because those depend on your dates. You choose the area first, then compare rooms in it.
Whichever base you pick, you will want a plan for the days. A guided walk is an easy way to learn the streets, so look at the Montmartre walking tours and see where they meet. Several start at metro stops, which is useful when you pick a base.

The three areas to compare
Pick the base that fits how you travel.
Upper Montmartre
This is the closest to the basilica and the Place du Tertre. You trade that for a steep hill, cobblestones and stairs. Before you book, check the real access with luggage, because step-free access and a quiet street are not guaranteed anywhere on the hill.
Place du Tertre →Abbesses and Pigalle
Abbesses is on metro line 12, and Pigalle is on lines 2 and 12. That makes these two a good link to the rest of the city. Both leave a walk uphill to the basilica.
Getting there →South Pigalle and the 9th arrondissement
South Pigalle, often called SoPi, and rue des Martyrs connect to shops and places to eat, and the 9th arrondissement reaches Pigalle. This is a different feel from the hilltop, so do not treat it as the same area.
If an evening at the Moulin Rouge is on your list, its metro station is Blanche on line 2. Read the Moulin Rouge guide for the show times and dress code.

Which area suits you
The trade-offs in one table.
| Area | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Upper Montmartre | Short walk to the basilica and the Place du Tertre | Hill, cobblestones and stairs with luggage |
| Abbesses and Pigalle | Metro lines 12 and 2 within reach | Quality varies by property, so check the street and the room |
| South Pigalle, 9th arrondissement | Shops and places to eat along rue des Martyrs | Further from the hilltop, with a walk up to the basilica |
For most first-time visitors, Abbesses and Pigalle is the easiest base: it combines metro access with a walk up to the basilica. If you travel light and want to be on the hill, upper Montmartre is the one to try.
The Abbesses metro entrance
The Art Nouveau entrance to the Abbesses metro station is a landmark of its own. The station is on line 12, and it is a good point to measure your hotel's distance from.

Before you book
Questions to ask the hotel.
The way from the metro
Ask how many stairs lead from the nearest metro station to the entrance, and whether the building has a lift. Montmartre has many stairs and cobbled streets.
Noise
No area is guaranteed quiet, and a lively street is not the same everywhere. Ask for a room facing the courtyard or a side street if sleep matters to you.
Arrival and departure times
The funicular runs from 06:00 to 00:45, and the basilica is open from 06:30 to 22:30. Both help to plan an early or late arrival.

Where to stay in Montmartre: frequently asked questions
Which area is good to stay in near Sacré-Cœur?
For most first-time visitors, Abbesses and Pigalle offer the easiest mix of metro access and a walk to the basilica. Upper Montmartre is closer but steeper, and the 9th arrondissement is a more city-like base further from the hilltop.
Is Montmartre a quiet place to stay?
It depends on the street. No area is guaranteed quiet, so ask the hotel which side the room faces.
Is Montmartre step-free?
No. The hill has stairs and cobbled streets. Ask the hotel about access with luggage, and check the basilica's lift entrance at 35 rue du Chevalier de la Barre if you need it.
How much is the tourist tax in Paris in 2026?
It ranges from €0.65 per adult per night for a one- or two-star campsite to €15.93 for a palace. A three-star hotel is €5.53 and a four-star hotel €8.45.
Which hotel should I book?
This guide names no hotels. Choose the area first, then compare rooms and cancellation terms on your dates.
Is this the official Sacré-Cœur or Montmartre tourism website?
No. This is an independent guide, not connected to the basilica, any hotel or the city. Check each property's own details before you book.
