When to visit Sacré-Cœur

The basilica is open every day of the year from 06:30 to 22:30, so you can choose between an early start, a midday visit and an evening one. The time of day matters more than the month. Visitor traffic is heaviest from 10:30 to 17:00, with a wait of about 10 to 15 minutes at the entrance as a rough guide. Nobody can promise an empty forecourt, but you can plan around the busy window.

If you plan to go inside the dome, check the opening hours and the dome climb and ticket prices first. The dome opens later than the church, closes earlier, and can close in bad weather.

The best time of day

Early, late or in between.

Early morning

The church opens at 06:30, and the first mass is at 07:00, so visitors are mixed with people at prayer. Go before the busy window and keep your voice down. The funicular starts at 06:00, which makes an early climb easy.

Midday and afternoon

This is the heaviest period. If you come then, expect the entrance queue and a crowded forecourt.

Evening

You can visit until 22:30, and the funicular runs until 00:45. A late visit lets you see the hill after the daytime crowds have thinned, but no guarantee of an empty square comes with it. The dome closes earlier, so do not plan the view for late evening.

Sunrise and sunset

Sunrise and sunset change through the year, so look up the time for your date and arrive early to find a spot. The view from the forecourt depends on the sky, and the opening hours of the church and the dome do not follow the sun.

What each season means for a visit

Based on the weather averages above.

Spring, March to May

Daytime averages climb from 12.8 °C in March to 20.2 °C in May. May is also the rainiest of the three months, at 69.0 mm.

Summer, June to August

Highs reach 25.7 °C in July and nights stay at 14 to 16 °C. If heat bothers you, plan the hill climb for the morning.

Autumn, September to November

September is mild at 21.5 °C, and October averages 16.5 °C with 55.2 mm of rain. November drops to 11.1 °C.

Winter, December to February

Days average 7.6 to 8.8 °C and nights 3.2 to 3.8 °C. Bring a warm layer.

Special days to know

Hours and traffic rules that change the day.

First Thursday of the month

The basilica closes at 24:00 on the first Thursday of the month, an exception to the usual 22:30. It is not a general night opening for tourists.

Sundays

Montmartre takes part in Paris Respire on Sundays from 11:00 to 19:00, with traffic changes in some streets. Masses run through the day, so allow for quiet inside.

Evening plans

If you end the day with a show, read about the Moulin Rouge evening programme.
